Basecut is in active development. Here is what has landed recently. Currently on v2.8.20.

v2.8.20

Your disk is yours again

  • Basecut no longer copies your footage. The organized folders (by quality, by shot, by type) are now shortcuts to your original files, exactly like a professional editor references media: zero duplicate gigabytes. On one machine a single shoot had ballooned 264GB of footage into 777GB of copies and filled the drive; that entire class of problem is gone.
  • Want real copies? A new setting, "Copy media into library" (Analysis, advanced), turns physical copies back on for the wipe-my-card-afterwards workflow. It now checks free disk space BEFORE starting and refuses loudly if the drive can't hold it.
  • A full drive stops the run honestly. Placement now halts with a clear error naming the drive instead of silently skipping hundreds of clips while reporting success.
  • Old aborted scan folders clean themselves up after a day.
v2.8.19

The audit release: chapters that jump, previews that answer

  • Chapter clicks now play instantly. Jumping to any part of a long video reuses the small per-part previews Basecut already made during the scan, instead of re-encoding a new one per click (which could hang the player for minutes on a fresh run).
  • First preview of a clip is fast and light. No more multi-hundred-MB preview files or coffee-break waits when browsing a fresh run.
  • The Color tab opens on your footage. It now skips empty in-progress scans, picks the newest run with clips, only builds its smooth-scrubbing preview when you actually play or scrub, and tells you plainly when a clip is taking unusually long.
  • Your place in the Library is truly remembered. Scroll position now survives leaving and returning to a run, alongside filters and sort.
  • Counts you can trust. The run card's hero/keep numbers now match the pills inside, clips without a shot type get their own "untagged" filter chip, fast scrolling can no longer leave the list half-loaded, and a scan with no live process behind it says "interrupted" instead of "Scanning now" forever.
  • The updater cleans up after itself. Update downloads reuse a verified installer instead of re-downloading every few hours, and stale installers (up to 12GB on one machine) are swept from the temp folder.
v2.8.18

No clip left behind

  • A clip can no longer be lost to an AI hiccup. When the AI model returns unusable output for a clip (the cause of "N failed" counts that came back run after run), Basecut now retries with a lighter request, and if that still fails, keeps the clip in your library marked "Review me" instead of dropping it. Re-scanning later retries the full analysis automatically.
  • Failed clips now tell you why. The run page's failure panel lists each failed clip with a plain-English reason (slow drive, damaged file, locked file...) and the technical details behind a click, so you're never guessing.
v2.8.17

Chapters in order, clicks that land

  • The preview's chapter bar now runs in time order (it was showing parts in internal storage order) and clicking a chapter always jumps: the part indicator and highlight update instantly, whether the player is on the full source or a proxy window.
v2.8.16

The Color tab keeps up with your clicks

  • Clicking between clips on the Color tab is fast now. Preview frames come from Basecut's own local proxies (which already exist for every analyzed clip) instead of decoding 4K frames off your source drive on every click. Your grade still bakes against the originals at export: this only speeds up what you SEE while working.
v2.8.15

The Library grows up

  • Videos play as one video. The preview's chunk buttons became a chapter bar: a proportional map of the whole source, colored by verdict, with the playing part highlighted. Click any chapter to jump there: "Part 3 of 9, 2:00-3:00 of the full video," not nine tiny separate videos.
  • Sort your run: Best first, Recorded order, Longest first, or File name: next to the filter box.
  • The Color tab lists clips in the order you shot them: grade the morning, then the afternoon, like an editor would.
  • The Library remembers where you were: filters, sort, and scroll position survive leaving and coming back, and the random page flash during live refresh is gone.
  • Auto Edit (formerly Edit) now says what it is: a coming-soon page for the full timeline editor we're building, with a one-click peek at the early preview.
v2.8.14

The timeline is here

  • Your planned cut is now a real timeline. Every episode shows its segments as draggable clips on a horizontal strip: drag to reorder, drag the edges to trim, click to play from there, hover-x to remove (the gap closes itself). The highlight follows along during Preview cut. Familiar on sight: no manual needed.
  • The DJI D-Log color note now explains the situation instead of alarming you: DJI tags its log files as Rec.709 (vendor quirk), Basecut grades them as log, which is correct when you shot log.
v2.8.13

Episodes that fill, reruns that merge, cards that finish

  • Every episode gets real footage now. When your whole trip is one location, episodes split by shooting day (your 8 days become the chapters) instead of episode 1 swallowing everything and episodes 3-4 coming up empty.
  • Re-running failed clips merges into the original run instead of creating a confusing second run in the Library: good clips replay instantly from the run's journal, only the failures re-analyze.
  • Job cards can't get stuck on "Finalizing" anymore (and a stuck card can no longer block updates or trigger surprise re-scans): the app now trusts the run's own completion marker.
