Terms of service
Effective 2026-05-24. Last updated 2026-06-15.
The short version
Use Basecut on your own machines to edit your own footage or footage you're authorized to edit. Don't resell or redistribute the app itself. Subscriptions cancel any time. Lifetime is one purchase that keeps working. The app is provided as-is. We'll do our best to support you; we can't promise it will never crash.
1. License grant
Subject to these terms and your active license (subscription or lifetime), we grant you a non-exclusive, non-transferable license to install and use Basecut on machines you own or control, for personal or commercial post-production work. A single subscription or lifetime key covers one user across their own machines.
2. What you can't do
- Resell, sublicense, redistribute, or republish the Basecut app.
- Reverse-engineer, decompile, disassemble, deobfuscate, or otherwise attempt to extract Basecut's source code, AI prompts, model configurations, color-science methods, or analysis pipeline, except where applicable law expressly permits despite this restriction.
- Use any part of Basecut (its prompts, methods, reference data, or pipeline) as a basis or reference to build a competing or substantially similar product.
- Share a single license key across multiple users or organizations.
- Use Basecut to process footage you don't have the right to process.
- Use Basecut to violate any law, infringe anyone's rights, or generate content prohibited by the cloud backend you're using.
These restrictions don't apply to rights you have under applicable law that can't be waived by contract.
3. Subscription, lifetime, and renewal
Monthly subscriptions renew automatically through Dodo Payments until you cancel. You can cancel any time from the billing portal in your account; access stays active through the end of the paid period. Lifetime licenses are a single purchase that includes the version of Basecut available at purchase and all subsequent updates we ship to the lifetime tier.
4. Refunds
Every purchase carries a 30-day money-back guarantee, handled through Dodo Payments. If something is broken on our end, reply to your receipt and we'll work with you directly.
5. Third-party services
Basecut uses third-party services you choose to enable: Dodo Payments as merchant of record for purchase and billing, Supabase for your account, Google's Gemini API as an optional cloud backend, and Blackmagic Design's DaVinci Resolve as an optional integration target. Your use of those services is governed by their own terms. We're not responsible for outages, billing, or policy changes on services we don't control. You bring your own Gemini API key, so any API charges are between you and Google.
6. Your content
You own your footage. We don't claim any rights to the video files you ingest, the metadata Basecut generates from them, the edited projects you produce, or anything you create using Basecut. We can't access your content because it stays on your machine.
7. AI-generated output
Basecut uses AI models (Whisper, Qwen, Gemini, YOLO, PySceneDetect) to generate tags, descriptions, transcripts, scene splits, and color suggestions. AI output can be wrong, biased, or hallucinated. Review automated tags before relying on them for anything material. The AI-assisted color corrections are a starting point; a human editor should sign off before delivery.
8. Warranty disclaimer
Basecut is provided "as is" and "as available," without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We don't warrant that the app will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that any specific result will be produced.
9. Limit of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, Basecut is not liable for indirect, incidental, consequential, special, exemplary, or punitive damages, including lost profits, lost revenue, lost data, or business interruption, even if we've been advised of the possibility. Our total cumulative liability for any claim arising out of or related to these terms or your use of Basecut is limited to the amount you paid us for the app in the twelve months preceding the claim.
10. Termination
You can stop using Basecut and cancel any active subscription at any time. We may suspend or terminate a license if you breach these terms. On termination, your right to use the app ends; any local files you produced with Basecut remain yours and stay on your machine.
11. Changes to the app and these terms
Basecut evolves. We may add, change, or remove features. If we change these terms in a material way, we'll update the date at the top and post a note in the next release. Continued use of Basecut after a change means you accept the updated terms.
12. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Kansas, United States, without regard to its conflict of law principles. Disputes that can't be resolved informally go to the state or federal courts located in Kansas, and you consent to jurisdiction and venue there.
13. Our intellectual property
Basecut, including its software, user interface, AI prompts and prompt-engineering, model configurations, reference data, color-science methods, and analysis pipeline, is the proprietary property of Basecut and its owner, protected by copyright and trade-secret law. We grant you a license to use the app (section 1); we transfer no ownership or other intellectual-property rights to you. The prompts, methods, and pipeline embedded in the app are trade secrets that we take reasonable measures to protect; their presence in a distributed build does not make them public or waive their confidential status, and extracting them is misappropriation. "Basecut" and the Basecut logo are our marks.
