How to choose clips for a wedding highlight film
A highlight film is built from a short pile of the strongest moments, not from the whole wedding. Write the shot list first, let software rate every clip and mark the best moments, then fill the gaps by search. Basecut does the rating and marking on your own Mac or PC; the choices that make the film yours stay with you.

Where a step names Basecut, it is our product, so judge that part on your own footage. The shot-list-first order works with any tool.
A starting shot list
| Part of the day | Look for | Search or brief words |
|---|---|---|
| Getting ready | Dress, rings, shoes, a laugh with the wedding party | "dress detail", "rings" |
| First look | The reaction, not the walk up | "first look" |
| Ceremony | Aisle walk, a vow line, the kiss | "you may kiss", "I promise" |
| Portraits | Two or three slow, wide moments | "couple portrait", "drone" |
| Reception | Entrance, a toast line, first dance, the exit | "raise your glasses", "sparkler exit" |
Step by step
1. Write the highlight shot list first
Before you open any footage, list what the film needs: the getting-ready details, the first look, the walk down the aisle, the kiss, the exit, a few lines from the vows and toasts, and two or three wide establishing shots. Put the short version in Basecut's brief box (up to 400 characters).
2. Let every clip be rated against the rest of the wedding
Basecut rates each clip hero, keeper, maybe, skip or junk with one to five stars, graded against the rest of the same wedding. Long takes are judged section by section, and the best moment's time is marked, so the kiss inside a forty-minute ceremony take is easy to reach.
3. Start from the heroes and Brief match clips
Filter to heroes and keepers, then look for the Brief match tag. This is your first highlight pile. Press A to keep a clip, R to reject it, and S to swap to a better take of the same shot.
4. Fill the gaps from the shot list by search
For anything on the list that is missing, search by what happened or what was said: "sparkler exit", "dress detail", "you may kiss". The result opens the preview at the matching moment.
5. Send only the selects to your editor
Tick the clips you kept and send them, organized by shot type, rating or both. Resolve gets bins, ratings and markers, Premiere Pro gets label colors and a sequence per verdict, and Final Cut Pro gets keyword collections. Now pick the music and cut.
What AI can and cannot judge
- It can measure focus, shake and exposure, and rank clips against the rest of the wedding.
- It can find what happened and what was said, and mark the best moment in a long take.
- It cannot know who matters most to the couple, which inside joke lands, or which shot fits the beat of the song.
For the spoken moments alone, see How to find the vows, speeches and toasts in wedding footage.

Questions people ask
How many clips do I need for a wedding highlight film?
There is no fixed number, but most editors want a pile several times longer than the film so they can cut to the music. Starting from the heroes and keepers, plus anything on your shot list, keeps that pile small.
Can AI pick the clips for my highlight film?
It can do the first pass. Basecut rates every clip and marks the best moments, which is a strong starting pile. It cannot know which guest matters most to the couple or which shot fits the song, so the final selection is yours.
Will it cut the highlight film for me?
No. Basecut sorts, rates, marks and hands the selects to Resolve, Premiere Pro or Final Cut Pro. The edit, the music and the story stay with you.
What if the best shot is technically flawed?
A shaky or soft clip can rate low even when it is the only angle of a key moment. Search for the moment by what happened, check the maybes around it, and click the stars to set your own rating.
Does this upload the wedding?
Not with Argus, Basecut's own AI, which runs on an Apple Silicon Mac with 16 GB of memory or a Windows PC with an NVIDIA card with 10 GB or more of video memory. Basecut Cloud, included on paid plans, is a faster option that sends reduced-size copies of clips to Google.
