How to find the best moments in event footage

To find the best moments in hours of event footage, rate and transcribe every clip first, then watch only what rises to the top. Basecut ranks each clip from hero to junk, splits long takes into sections so a strong minute inside a long keynote stands on its own, and lets you search by what was said. You skip the scrubbing and spend your time on the moments the client will actually want.

Where a step names Basecut, it is our product, so judge that part on your own footage. The method (brief, rate, search, confirm) works the same for a conference, a product launch, a gala or a wedding reception.

What makes event footage hard

Events are long and mostly quiet. A conference day can be eight hours across three cameras, and the moments that matter (the line that got a laugh, the award handover, the standing ovation) are a few minutes scattered through it. Scrubbing is slow because the good minutes look like the dull ones in a thumbnail. What separates them is what happens and what is said, which is exactly what an analysis pass records.

Step by step

  1. 1. Put each event in its own folder

Copy every camera's cards for the event into one folder, one subfolder per camera if you like. Folder names are searchable later, so a name like "2026-11 Acme summit" pays off. Basecut reads the files where they are and never changes them.

  2. 2. Write a brief that names the moments

In the optional brief box on the import screen, list what the client will want: "the CEO keynote, the award handover, the panel Q&A, crowd reactions". Clips that match rank higher. The brief is used for that event only.

  3. 3. Run the analysis, overnight for a long event

Basecut watches every clip, transcribes what is said, and rates each clip from hero to junk. Long continuous takes, such as a 40 minute keynote, are split into sections and judged section by section, so the strong minutes of a long take surface on their own.

  4. 4. Start from the heroes, then search for the rest

Filter to Hero and Keepers for the strongest moments. For anything specific, search the library by what happened or what was said: "applause", "thank you to our sponsors", "award". A spoken match shows the words around it, and a moment chip opens the preview at that point in the clip instead of the start.

  5. 5. Confirm the picks by eye and ear

Watch each chosen moment. Press A to keep, R to reject, S to pick a different take, U to undo. Nothing is deleted.

  6. 6. Open the event in your editor with the moments marked

Send the run to DaVinci Resolve, Premiere Pro or Final Cut Pro. Clips arrive sorted by verdict with star ratings and markers on the best moments, so you build the recap or highlight reel from marked moments instead of from raw files.

Questions people ask

How do I find the best moments in hours of event footage?

Rate and transcribe every clip first, then work from the top. Basecut ranks every clip from hero to junk, splits long takes into sections so a strong minute inside a long keynote surfaces on its own, and lets you search by what was said. Then you watch only the moments it surfaces instead of every hour.

Can I search event footage for something a speaker said?

Yes, when the clip has speech. Basecut transcribes it during analysis, search reads the transcript, and a match shows an excerpt around the words with the time in the clip.

Does it work for corporate events and conferences, or only weddings?

Any event. The rating looks at what happens and what is said in each clip, and the brief tells it what matters for this event, whether that is a keynote, an award or a first dance.

Does Basecut sync multi-camera event footage?

Not inside the app today. Sync your angles in your editor. Basecut sorts and marks the clips from every camera before that step.

Does event footage leave my computer?

Not with Argus, Basecut's own AI, which runs on an Apple Silicon Mac with 16 GB of memory or a Windows PC with an NVIDIA card with 10 GB or more of video memory. Search also runs on your computer. Basecut Cloud, included on paid plans, is a faster option that sends reduced-size copies of clips to Google, so leave it off for a client who requires footage to stay local.
