GoPro Protune color correction: flat HERO footage to real color
GoPro footage has a specific failure mode: it comes out of the camera flat, someone applies a "cinematic GoPro LUT," and the water turns neon. The cause is a misunderstanding about what Protune Flat actually is.
Protune Flat is not log
Protune Flat lowers contrast and saturation so highlights and shadows survive for grading. But unlike S-Log3 or D-Log, it is a picture profile, not a logarithmic encoding, and at standard white balance its colors already sit in Rec.709-style primaries. It needs contrast and saturation restored, not converted. Most downloadable GoPro LUTs ignore this and bake in a gamut stretch plus a creative look, which is where the oversaturated water and orange skin come from.
Expose to protect the highlights
Action-camera sensors are small and clip highlights fast: sky, snow, and water speculars are gone the moment they hit the ceiling. Protune gives you an EV Comp control; a third to two-thirds of a stop under the meter in bright scenes is a common working habit, then lift shadows in the grade. Check the histogram, not the tiny screen. Lock white balance to a fixed value (not Auto) whenever the light allows; Auto WB drifting mid-clip is much harder to fix than a uniform cast.
The correction order that works
1. White balance first, on a gray reference or the vectorscope, while the image is still flat. Underwater and snow footage almost always carry a cast.
2. Restore contrast with a curve, a gentle S-curve rather than the contrast slider, watching the waveform so nothing clips.
3. Bring saturation back to taste, usually a smaller push than you expect once contrast is in. Skin and foliage go wrong first; watch them.
4. Look last, at reduced strength. If you like a creative GoPro LUT, apply it after the restore at 40 to 60 percent so it styles a correct image instead of fighting a flat one.
Mixing GoPro with real cameras
On multi-rig shoots (a HERO on the chest, a mirrorless on sticks), correct each camera to a neutral baseline before any shared look. The GoPro's smaller sensor means its shadows get noisy earlier; match the mirrorless down to the GoPro's usable range rather than pushing the GoPro up.
