Canon C-Log color correction: C-Log2 and C-Log3 to Rec.709

Canon is famous for skin tones, and then you shoot Log and everything looks gray and lifeless. Nothing is broken. Here is why C-Log2 and C-Log3 look like that, which conversion each one needs, and the correction order that gets Canon color back without going waxy.

Why Canon Log looks flat

C-Log2 and C-Log3 are logarithmic encodings: they squeeze Canon’s full sensor range into the file so a bright window and a dim interior both survive in one shot. Your monitor expects Rec.709, a smaller container, so until you translate between the two the image renders low-contrast and desaturated. The color everyone praises Canon for is still in the file. It just has not been mapped for your display yet.

C-Log2 or C-Log3: know which you shot

These are two different curves, not one profile with two names, and they need different conversion LUTs. C-Log2 captures the widest dynamic range Canon offers and looks the flattest out of camera; it rewards careful grading. C-Log3 is a gentler curve that protects highlights while staying easier to correct, closer in feel to the original C-Log. Apply a C-Log2 LUT to C-Log3 footage (or the reverse) and you get wrong contrast and skewed color that fights you for the rest of the grade. Check the profile before you touch a wheel, especially if a shoot mixed bodies or settings.

The correction order that protects Canon skin

1. White balance first. Neutralize the cast while the footage is still log, using a gray reference or the scopes rather than your eyes. Canon skin only lands if the neutral is right underneath it; every later step inherits whatever cast you leave.

2. Transform with the matching LUT. Apply the correct C-Log2 or C-Log3 conversion after neutralizing. A LUT on top of a warm or green cast bakes the cast in and bends every hue built on it, which is exactly how good Canon skin goes waxy or magenta.

3. Set exposure with scopes. Bring the footage down until skin sits around 60 to 70 IRE on the waveform and nothing clips. Trust the waveform over your monitor, especially on a laptop screen. Canon skin reads right at a measurable place, not a vibe.

4. Match and grade last. If you shot a second camera, or Canon Log next to a Sony or a drone, match the corrected clips to each other before any creative look goes on. A look on mismatched sources just gives you mismatched clips wearing the same look.

The three mistakes that ruin most Canon Log grades

The wrong-profile LUT. C-Log2 and C-Log3 are not interchangeable. The single most common Canon Log mistake is a preset pack’s LUT built for the other curve.

LUT before white balance. The cast gets baked in, skin never lands, and you spend the whole grade fighting a problem you could have neutralized in one move.

Grading skin by eye. Your eyes adapt within seconds and Canon’s pleasing color makes it worse: you stop noticing drift. The waveform and vectorscope do not adapt.
