S-Log3 color correction: from flat log to Rec.709, step by step
Every Sony shooter has stared at gray, washed-out S-Log3 and wondered if something went wrong in camera. Nothing did. Here is why it looks like that, and the correction order that turns it into clean Rec.709 without wrecking your skin tones.
Why S-Log3 looks flat
S-Log3 is a logarithmic encoding: it squeezes roughly 14 stops of dynamic range into a file your camera can actually write. Your monitor, though, expects Rec.709, a much smaller container. Until you translate between the two, everything renders low-contrast and desaturated. The information is all there. It just has not been mapped for your display yet.
That translation is called a color space transform (CST), and it is the spine of every log workflow. Everything else in this guide happens either before or after it, and the order matters more than any individual setting.
Expose it right or nothing below fixes it
S-Log3 exposed at the meter puts your shadows near the sensor noise floor. Expose to the right instead: one to two stops over, then bring it down in the grade. Highlights in log have room to spare; shadows do not. Noise that gets recorded is permanent, and no grade recovers detail that drowned in it.
The correction order that works
1. White balance first. Neutralize the cast while the footage is still log, using a gray point or the scopes, not your eyes. Mixed lighting pushes S-Log3 skin tones magenta or green, and every step after this inherits whatever cast you leave behind.
2. Transform to Rec.709. Apply the CST or your conversion LUT after neutralizing. A LUT on top of a warm or green cast does not remove the cast; it bakes it in and bends every hue that sits on top.
3. Set exposure with scopes. Bring your ETTR footage down until skin sits around 60 to 70 IRE on the waveform and nothing clips. Trust the waveform over your monitor, especially on a laptop screen at night.
4. Saturation and matching last. Only now judge color. If you shot two cameras, or one camera across two lighting setups, match them here, before any creative look goes on. A look applied to mismatched clips just gives you two different-looking clips with the same LUT on them.
The three mistakes that ruin most S-Log3 grades
LUT before white balance. The most common one. The grade fights the cast forever and skin never lands.
Grading clip by clip by eye. Your eyes adapt within seconds. By clip ten your reference has drifted and the timeline flickers between looks. Scopes do not adapt.
Double transforms. A conversion LUT plus a camera-raw setting plus a project-level color space setting, all quietly stacking. If your footage looks crunchy and over-saturated before you touched anything, something is transforming twice.
The part nobody enjoys is the part that automates
