Panasonic V-Log color correction: V-Gamut to Rec.709 done right
Lumix shooters get one of the nicest log curves in the prosumer world, and one of the most commonly half-converted. Most washed-out V-Log complaints trace to the same mistake: converting the curve and skipping the gamut. Here is the whole picture.
V-Log is two conversions, not one
Like every log format, V-Log flattens the sensor's dynamic range into a gradable file, so straight off the card it looks low-contrast. But Panasonic also records in V-Gamut, a color space substantially wider than Rec.709. A conversion that handles only the curve leaves colors sitting in the wrong primaries: greens lean dull, saturated content never quite lands, and pushing saturation to compensate breaks skin. The correct transform does both legs: V-Log curve to display gamma and V-Gamut to Rec.709 primaries.
Expose for the shadows you want to keep
V-Log places middle gray low, and Lumix sensors reward generous exposure: a stop over the meter is a common working habit, then bring it down in the grade. Shadows that record near the noise floor stay noisy through any correction; highlights in log usually have room to spare. Check with the waveform, not the flat preview.
The correction order that works
1. White balance first, on a gray reference or the vectorscope, while the image is still flat.
2. Convert properly. In Resolve, a Color Space Transform node set to Panasonic V-Gamut / V-Log in, Rec.709 / Gamma 2.4 out, does both legs. A bare "V-Log to Rec.709" LUT may or may not include the gamut step; check what yours claims before trusting it.
3. Set exposure with scopes. Bring your over-exposed footage down until skin sits around 60 to 70 IRE and nothing clips.
4. Match, then look. Multi-cam shoots (a GH body on the gimbal, an S body on sticks) need matching to one neutral baseline before any creative grade, or one LUT produces two different-looking cameras.
The GH vs S wrinkle
GH-line bodies record V-Log L, a reduced-range variant; the S line records full V-Log. Same curve family, same V-Gamut, same workflow, but full V-Log holds more highlight range. If you cut both in one timeline, treat them as two cameras to match, not one.
