Why your video looks washed out on iPhone

Your grade looks perfect in DaVinci Resolve, then you AirDrop it to your phone and the color falls apart: flatter, less saturated, milky blacks. You did not ruin the grade. This is a color tag mismatch, and it is one of the most common questions in every color forum. Here is what is happening and how to fix it.

First, prove it is not your grade

Before you touch a single wheel, run one test. Take the exact file you exported and open it in VLC, in a web browser (drag it into a Chrome tab), and upload it privately to the platform you actually publish to. If it looks correct in those places and only looks washed out in QuickTime, Photos, or the iPhone Files preview, your grade is fine. The problem lives in how Apple is displaying the file, not in the pixels.

What is actually happening

Every video file carries color tags that tell a player how to interpret its gamma and color space. Apple's ecosystem (QuickTime, Photos, the iOS preview) reads those tags and applies its own gamma handling. When the tag Resolve writes and the gamma Apple expects do not line up, you get a gamma shift, and a gamma shift reads to your eye as washed out and desaturated. Same file, same data, different interpretation. It is the video equivalent of the same photo looking different in two apps.

The fixes, in order

1. Judge on the right screen. If you are delivering for the web (YouTube, Instagram, a client link), trust VLC, the browser, and the platform preview, not QuickTime. Nine times out of ten the export is already correct for where it is going.

2. Set the export tags on purpose. In Deliver, open Advanced Settings and set the color space and gamma tags explicitly rather than leaving them to guess. For standard delivery, Rec.709 with Gamma 2.4 is the safe pair. If your client specifically views in QuickTime and needs it to match there, the older workaround is to tag the gamma so QuickTime's shift cancels out. Export a ten second test and check it on their playback path before you render the whole thing.

3. Check Data Levels. A Full vs Video levels mismatch between your timeline and the export also reads as washed out or milky. Auto is usually the safe choice unless you have a specific reason.

4. Update macOS. Apple has narrowed this gamma shift in recent macOS releases, so on an up to date system the difference is much smaller than the horror stories from a few years ago. If you are seeing a large shift, an OS update alone may fix most of it.

The deeper cause: a shaky starting point

Tag issues are the last mile. They feel worse when your base color was never solid to begin with. If your footage went into Resolve flat log with the wrong color space transform, or exposure and white balance that drift shot to shot, then every downstream quirk (a gamma tag, an 8-bit gradient, a platform recompress) has more room to look broken. A clean, neutral, correctly color-managed base is the thing that survives whatever the player does to it.
